Crucial Women's State League match against Para Hills Knights this weekend, Senior Coach, Leigh Matthews shares his thoughts
Friday 14th of July - Arija Molitor Round 16 of the Women’s State League season takes place on Sunday, with the Pink Panthers taking on Para Hills Knights at Panther Park. As the regular season approaches its completion Senior Women’s Coach, Leigh Matthews, is optimistic about the run home.
“We had a really good start to the year, unfortunately in the middle we dropped 2 or 3 games which were close, but hopefully we can bounce back and finish the year strong and reach second place,” he said.
“You have to be optimistic, if you aren’t, why come out at all! You have to be positive, there is a mathematical chance we can still do it. “We play the teams above us before we finish the season and in the perfect scenario we get it all done.”
Looking at the season to date, Matthews is pleased with both his Senior squad and the Reserves.
“Jess Benzi, for someone so young and in her first year of Seniors, she has been excellent,” he told.
“Casie Coombe in goals, she quit goal keeping last year and has come back and done really well.
“With the Reserves too there has been a whole heap of girls who have done really well there, they deserve a mention for the way they have stepped up.”
Matthews, who is in his 5th year at South Adelaide and 4th year as Senior Women’s Coach is equally positive about Sunday’s match against the Knights who his side has drawn against and lost to this season in previous encounters.
“I am confident that we can beat them, I think we have the ability to,” he stated. “The last time we played them we were 3-1 down and got it back to 3 all, and I think the girls are a bit smarter from that experience.
“I think we have got the players and being at home should be an advantage.”
